Schreiner Farms is a hidden gem in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. Located in Dallasport, Washington, across the Columbia River from The Dalles, Oregon.
Schreiner Farms is not only a working cattle ranch but is also home to 18 different species of exotic animals.
We try to visit each and every time we find ourselves on the Washington side of the mighty Columbia near Dallasport. When our son and his wife and children moved to the area we were more than a little excited to show them this amazing place that is now so close to their home.
This is not a zoo, the animals live in wide open spaces on this 12,000 acre working ranch, so visitors are asked to stay in their cars and view the animals from the safety of their vehicles.
We actually had to take two cars when we went for a visit this time around, so we didn’t get to experience our grandchildren’s excitement as much as we would have liked to, but were still really glad to make them aware of this amazing place, and enjoyed hearing about their experience.
The camel in the photo was definitely everyone’s favorite animal of the day.
The following animals can be found at Schreiner Farms: antelope, emu, buffalo, camel, cattle, muntjack deer, reindeer, donkey, elk, giraffe, llama, mule, wallaroo, yak and zebra.
From the Schreiner Farms website: “We take pride in raising only the finest quality animals which receive the best of care and food available. We welcome any inquiries regarding the availability of our animals. Our ranch contains abundant fresh water springs and wonderful well water, which helps keep the animals healthy. Our animals are not enclosed in tiny pens like a zoo, but roam in spacious wide-open areas.”
While this is a working ranch visitors are allowed to visit. There are a few rules they ask visitors to follow when they visit:
- They are open from 9 am to dusk
- Stay in your vehicle
- Stay on the main road and turn around at the giraffe barn. There is a sign there
- Yield to farm traffic (tractors, quads and pickups)
- No Smoking
- Do not litter or throw anything out of your vehicle
